Thermal gasification of waste feedstock, like municipal solid waste (MSW) is different from pirolysis in that the thermal decomposition takes place in the presence of a limited amount of oxygen (air).

The generated synthetic gas from gasification can be used in either boiler or cleaned up and used in combustion at gas turbine-generators; this waste gas also can be converted to produce liquid fuel (Bio-Diesel).
