Our cities are increasingly burdened by municipal solid waste (MSW) and dumping in landfills is considered not a sustainable solution. Energy from waste becomes more attractive due to growing concerns about landfilling and need for renewable energy. However, conventional incineration of MSW with a steam cycle provides poor electric efficiency and involves operation issues. American Combustion Tech. Inc. (ACTI) projects offers approach to extracting energy from MSW for power production more efficiently from MSW and natural gas combined cycles. The aim is to achieve high energy conversion while minimizing environmental impacts. Modeling results show that the dual fuel combined cycles offer dramatically higher efficiency for power production than separate fuel power systems, in addition, we have potential CO₂ emission reduction by the combined cycles.
